Kalmo — meaning "corpse" or "spirit of the dead" in Finnish — is infernal blackened doom from Finland, rooted in the harsh and heavy sounds of extreme metal. The songs explore dark themes of death and damnation through stripped-down, raw compositions that blend heavy riffs, pounding drums, growling vocals, and a sense of haunting atmosphere.
The music is deliberately harsh and uncompromising, channeling influences from classic death, black, and doom metal into songs that reflect on death, darkness, and the rottening condition of humanity. The band does it themselves: writing, recording, self-producing, and producing its own stark music videos, with only the mixing and mastering handed to Roland at Cavern of Echoes.
Kalmo began in 2016 as one man's project and put out its first record in 2019. It became a full band in autumn 2024, and the lineup has taken its current shape over the two years since.
